8.8.08
Join us as we launch our first annual international, juried beading and design competition; what we hope will become the most prestigious beading contest worldwide! This will be the Bead Museum, Washington D.C.'s largest fundraising event in our museum's history! We aspire to capture audiences and artists from afar to introduce them to the wonderful world of beads! We wish to showcase beads in a new fashion, celebrating bead artistry and the designers who turn beads into art today!
The Bead Museum, DC is known for its exhibits on the history of beads and how they have traveled through time and cultures. To keep these exhibits available to future generations of bead lovers, museum goers and more, we turn to the artists of today. Today's artists, who will be celebrated in the museums of tomorrow, can help preserve the past and ensure that the historical knowledge that we have gained is passed on to future generations.
Officially launched on December 1st, 2007, this international contest is open to everyone from the professional to the hobbyist to the student. We invite artists from all avenues to enter and present beads and beading to the world as the next great collectible art form.
We are accepting photographed entries of artists' jewelry designs, mailed (postmarked) by July 25th, 2008, or emailed by midnight EST on August 8th, 2008. midnight HADT (Hawaii-Aleutian Daylight Time) on Sunday, August 10th, 2008.
There are 12 media categories for the contestants to enter: Clay, Fiber/Textile, Gemstones, Glass, Lampwork/Dichroic (handmade), Manmade Materials (inorganic), Metal, Mixed Media, Organic Materials, Seed Beads, Swarovski Crystal, and Trade/Ethnic Beads.
The rewards are great, as the top three pieces in each of the 12 media and applicant categories will be showcased in the Celebrating Beads, the journey of... exhibit to be displayed at the Bead Museum in downtown Washington D.C. from September 28th, 2008 through December 31st, 2008. In addition, 10 "Best of Show" awards will be given along with a "People's Choice" award to be decided by the guests attending the Bead Gala.
Winners will be announced at the Bead Society of Greater Washington's 2008 Bead Gala on September 20th, 2008 at the Navy Memorial Naval Heritage Center in Washington, D.C., located across the street from the Bead Museum.
So, get out your tools, your beads, and start completing your masterpieces today because in just six months, "the journey ends"!
All contest proceeds benefit the Bead Museum, DC.
